At a public meeting in Lerwick [Wed. 25 April] SSP Lerwick North Candidate
Kevin Learmonth pledged, if elected, to hold the giant Shetland wind farm
project
to account.
Far from being a get rich quick scheme, it could, he claimed, be “a financial
bottomless pit into which all our community funds disappear”.
Robbie Leith, Lerwick South Candidate, told the meeting “global warning is a reality, it is a very real threat, especially to island communities, and the council has done little to tackle local greenhouse gas emissions. It treats this project as a get rich quick scheme. We need to be serious about our environment, but at the moment, this wind farm looks all about cash at the expense of the environment”.
Lerwick
North and Lerwick South candidates, Kevin Learmonth and Robbie Leith have
spoken out against councilors excessive mileage expenses.
They are proposing a cut from the current 49.3p per mile to a more modest
35p per mile for SIC councilors. The inland revenue maximum tax free
rate is 40p per mile. Read more>>
From opposing the invasion of Iraq, to supporting anti-deporation campaigns, and speaking out about council plans to charge for social care provision, the SSP in Shetland is never far away from standing up against injustice.
This May we have, for the first time ever, stood candidates for the Shetland Islands Council.
Robbie Leith stood for the new SIC council ward of Lerwick South. This is made up of the old wards of Twageos, Breiwick, Sound, South Lochside and Gulberwick.
Kevin Learmonth stood for the new ward of Lerwick North. This new ward includes Bressay, Harbour and North Lerwick.
