If Shetland is so rich, how come at least 7% of the population is living in economic or social deprivation?
I was born in Lerwick in 1951. I left the Anderson Educational Institute
in 1968 with 8 ‘O’ levels and went to sea as an Engineer Cadet.
After five years at sea I returned home and worked as a fitter at HNP Engineers, married and built a house in Asta.
I was one of the initial members of the Tingwall Hall Committee responsible for building the new hall there. I was the instigator for the Tingwall Foy that ran for a few years raising funds.
I have two grown up children from my first marriage.
I was a union shop steward when I worked as a fitter at Lerwick Power Station, a role I have carried out a number of times since. I worked for the US Coastguard at Scatsta for 4 years, and whilst there went to night school, gaining 5 highers.
In 1996 I suffered total kidney failure due to a viral disease and spent years in and out of hospital on dialysis. I have since received a kidney transplant and I am now fully fit and able to work again.
I have been politically active since the mid 80s when I joined the Labour Party and canvassed for them whilst living and working in London. I also supported the miners strike, and the print workers at Wapping. After New Labour came to power I became disillusioned with their right wing policies and joined the Scottish Socialist Party instead.
My main interest is music and I play as often as I can. For my sins I introduced karaoke to Shetland.
If you would like to speak to me about anything, call me on 07880 950 248.
