If Shetland is so rich, how come at least 7% of the population is living in economic or social deprivation?
Shetland SSP will hold wind farm project to account>>
Our next branch meeting will be on Thursday 4 October. 6:30 pm, Islesburgh Community Centre, King Harald Street, Lerwick. Come along and meet with us.
Hard working Highlands and Islands Region list candidate was in Shetland this week for a series of meetings in Brae, Lerwick plus a very successful hustings meeting at Brae High with other Scottish Parliament Candidates. Donnie, originally from Lochaber is number 1 on the SSP Highland and Islands List. He left Shetland on Thursday to attend a hustings meeting on Skye with an expected audience of over 200.
Before leaving Donnie said:
Donnie said "Our flagship policy for a free public transport network
will make a huge difference to people in Shetland. Bus services are infrequent
here, and ferries are expensive. We would cancel fares for foot and cycle
passengers, and introduce Road Equivalent Tolls for cars and lorries.
"
Whilst in the Northern Isles I will also launch our campaign against prescription
charges. It is a
basic socialist principle that the whole Health Service, including prescriptions,
should be free for everyone. Prescription charges are an unfair tax on ill
people.
"
Families would benefit from our policy of free, nutritious school meals for
all pupils, using
locally sourced produce, and giving farmers a fair price.
"
Unlike the mainstream parties, the SSP does not have millionaire backers.
We put communities before big business and people before profit."
